[edit] Reception
Prior to the release of Blackout, "Piece of Me" was among the critically praised and recommended of the album’s tracks. Margeaux Watson of Entertainment Weekly praised "Piece of Me" stating it "is a rump shaker that finds Spears venting".[11] Chuck Taylor of Billboard said that "the song drips and drools ’80s synths, alongside a drowsy midtempo clip, as Brit sings in a heavily layered near-monotone."[12] Bill Lamb from about.com wrote that the song is brilliant, and is one reason to listen to Blackout.[13] Kelefa Sanneh of New York Times defined "Piece of Me" as: "[a song] introduced by a sludgy bass line, Ms. Spears waxes defensive, in a heavily synthesized voice that’s the main (and sometimes only) instrument."[6] Melissa Maerz of Rolling Stone referred to it as "tabloid-bashing banger" and a "must hear song",[14] while including it in their annual "100 Best Songs of the Year" at number fifteen.[15] Alex Fletcher of Digital Spy noted that the song’s "fat, squelching series of beats and bleeps", is "an electro-thudding cry of defiance".[16] Jennifer Vineyard reported that "Spears’ mission statement of sorts, finds the singer so vocoder-ized that it’s hard to tell where the real Britney begins and ends — which is part of the point."[2]
"Piece of Me" gained attention from critics for its introspective content. Kelly Oliver-Hornyak of The Lantern, a student publication of Ohio State University, found "Piece of Me" a matured version of Spears’s 2000 single "Stronger, noting that "she has dealt with her family in the spotlight and a divorce rather than her teenage break-ups."[17] Bill Lamb commented that "Britney Spears answers all of the critics directly, forcefully, and fearlessly", giving the song four and a half stars out of five.[18]
[edit] Chart performance
"Piece of Me" charted on digital downloads alone upon the release of Blackout. It debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number sixty-five,[19] as well as at number thirty-seven on the Canadian Hot 100.[20] After the release of the music video, the song climbed up the charts. In its eighth week on the Hot 100, "Piece of Me" rose to number twenty-one.[21] Despite falling to number twenty-eight, the song was still bulleted, and rose to number twenty-three the next week. After peaking at number eighteen, it fell to twenty-three due to fall on digital sales as well as radio audience; the single has, despite the fall, sold more than 700,000 downloads to date earning a gold status. [22]
In the UK, "Piece of Me" debuted at number sixty-nine on December 24, 2007. It then climbed to number two, prior to its physical release; this made the song more successful than "Gimme More", which peaked at number three. The single entered the Irish Singles Chart at number twenty-four, and reached the top spot on January 12.[23] It became her seventh Irish number-one single, tying with Madonna as solo female artist with the most number ones in the country. "Piece of Me" has also reached the top ten in Bulgaria and Sweden, the single’s first appearance.[24]
In the Mexican Hot 100 the song entered the chart at number 78 and topped the charts three weeks later. In Australia the song debuted at number two on the main chart, after topping the Dance Chart of that country.[25] Also in Oceania, the single debuted in New Zealand at number thirty-four. It moved up to sixteen the next week and one week later it charted in at nine. It then moved up to number five where it stayed for two weeks and is now sitting at four, surpassing "Gimme More", which peaked at number fifteen in October 2007.[26]
The song has also been successful in the United World Chart, where it debuted at number thirty-eight on the first week of 2008; Later it moved up to thirty-one, on the following week it climbed to number twenty-three and subsequently moved to twelve; After entering the top ten at eight, it peaked at number six where the single is currently sitting for its second week. So far, the single has gained 926,000 United World Chart points.[27]
[edit] Music video
The music video[28] was filmed on November 27 and November 28, 2007 at an exclusive Hollywood nightclub and restaurant, Social Hollywood, and had a budget of US$ 500,000[29] compared to her previous video, "Gimme More", amounting to US$25,000. This was the most expensive Spears’s music video since "Toxic," which had the budget of $1,000,000. It was directed by Wayne Isham, who had previously worked with Spears in the video "I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" and in the international Pepsi commercial campaign in 2002. On November 30, 2007, the "Britney Spears Wants a Piece of You" contest was launched in which fans can make videos of "Piece of Me" themselves using MTV’s Video Remixer. The winning video aired on TRL on December 20. MTV, Jive Records and Spears chose the winner.[30]
Britney Spears dancing in a luxurious restroom for the video.
The music video begins with a group of ruthless paparazzi taking pictures outside a residential area where various blonde girls are changing clothes and playfully dancing. Spears is then shown in front of a multi-colored illuminated background wearing a brown-fur vest, black bra, and destroyed jeans. Scenes with Spears tearing negative tabloid covers down and creating positive ones are interpolated throughout the video. Spears later joins the other girls who have changed into matching blonde-bob wigs, dark sunglasses, and black trench coats as they enter a car being hounded by paparazzi. The girls make it to the party and exit the car in different clothes. Spears is wearing a sequined purple dress and Kimoto styled jacket. Inside the party a rouge paparazzi joins the girls in the bathroom and Spears finds out he is a pap. She writes "sucker" on his forehead with red lip-stick and begins to dance with her friends in the bathroom. Lastly the girls are seen back at the apartment watching an entertainment news show where the "Britney invasion" from earlier is reported. The final scene shows a close up of Spears’s face smirking.
The video came in two versions: USA Version and International Version. The International Version included scenes of Britney with a short blonde wig at the beginning, and different scenes towards the end of the video. The USA version excluded the wig scenes. The videos both included the same video effects, though.
On December 13, 2007, People, Us Weekly and ABC posted a small preview of the video on their websites, and it was confirmed on the Canadian music countdown show MuchOnDemand that MuchMusic would premiere the video on Monday, December 17, 2007. As previously announced, the video made its world premiere on the ABC news magazine 20/20 on Friday, December 14, 2007, and became available a few minutes later on Spears’s and MTV’s official website and also on her official YouTube channel. The video was then premiered on TRL on December 19, 2007. The video cuts off the repeated chorus and the repeated line at the end of the song. The video was released to the U.S and UK’s iTunes Store on December 23, 2007. Since its release, the video has peaked at numbers one, two and three in the Canadian, U.S., and UK iTunes music video charts, respectively. The video debuted on VH1’s VSpot Top 20 Countdown at number twenty on January 4, climbing to number two in the following week,[31] making the video more successful than that of "Gimme More", which peaked at number ten in November. The video has also currently reached number two on VH1’s Weekly Video Countdown (as voted for on VH1.com) and number three on Total Request Live. The music video has so far peaked at two on Blender Magazine‘s top 100 videos.[32]
The music video was well received by critics. Bill Lamb from About.com wrote that "Spears is at top again and that this video brings memories from the 90’s "…Baby One More Time" and from 2004’s "Toxic"; he also said "the video is just brilliant so is the song."[33] Other reviewers stated that "Piece of Me" shows a piece of the old Britney and that it was just perfect for her career." The music video, to date, has been viewed over 18 million times on Youtube. [34]
[edit] UK download cover
There is an alternate cover for the CD single which features images of Spears’s fans making up the main image of Spears in a montage form. Fans that had signed up for Sony BMG UK Britney Spears updates received the e-mail which read, "We’re going to create a mosaic montage picture of Britney made up of all your pictures so that you can be a piece of her". The cover was revealed on January 4, 2008.[35] The reaction of the contest was positive the official website received over 13 million pictures from people around the world.
